Planning a trip is always a moment of hope and joy; a process in which many decisions are made, such as where to go, how long, which hotel, airline, etc. All important and necessary decisions in order to create a spectacular memory and to live a new, exciting experience.
But as the holidays and preparations get closer, doubts and anxieties begin to arise. And the greatest burden is packing a suitcase for air travel. Packing causes always many headaches before a trip, but there’s a solution for everything. Below you’ll find some tips that will help you to make packing less stressful a process.
Tips for packing a suitcase
The first thing to do before starting packing is to think about the type of trip you are going to take and, consequently, the type of equipment and clothing you are going to need during your travels. Although this may seem silly, depending on the destination, the temperature of the place, the transport that you are going to use and especially the restrictions of the airlines… you’ll need to choose what to take with you. Once all these factors are taken into account, you can choose between a suitcase and a backpack.
Something that must also be taken into account is the size of the luggage, since, depending on your airline, the size restrictions may vary. So check the size and weight restrictions before arriving to the airport and having to pay extra for oversize/weight.
Another thing to keep in mind before starting with the packing – something that can be of great help -, is to make a list of things that you consider necessary for your trip. In order to do that, it is important to sit down and think about what you really need. You can make a list with the most basic things and then add others, but always take into account the limited space available.
After the three previous tips, let’s start packing. And that’s where the million dollar question lies…
What can I carry in the hand luggage?
At the moment, for many hand luggage is the only luggage one travels with as the changes in airlines’ policies mean that one needs to pay for checking in a luggage.
Travelling with hand luggage only is very common and it poses the question of what can be taken in the plane. There is no need to worry: next, we are going to inform you of the things that are allowed to be carried in hand luggage.
First, all kinds of electronic devices such as mobile phones, computers, tablets, e-books, etc. are allowed; but yes, during the journey they might move in your suitcase.
Secondly, makeup, cosmetics, shampoos, and other bodycare products are also allowed in hand luggage, provided they do not exceed 100 ml and are packed in a plastic bag.
And, finally, remember to keep all the essential documentation such as passport, identity card or driving license with you … all necessary for travelling abroad.
Once the three previous points are solved and everything is prepared to be packed, there comes the big question: how to pack everything in a suitcase.
Although not an easy thing to do, we offer you some tricks so that you don’t need to sit on the suitcase to close it and be afraid afterwards of the suitcase exploding any moment.
TRICK 1: Many of us are used to taking too many things with us, just in case, leading to us carrying things that we are not even going to wear. To avoid this, try to take only one set of clothes for each day, creating daily looks that can be combined with each other, thus getting rid of unnecessary, excess clothing. Fewer clothes that you will not wear means more space for other things.
TRICK 2: Once you have chosen the clothes you’re going to take, it’s time to put on the professional mode and fit all the pieces in a suitcase as if you were playing Tetris. Do not forget to put shoes in individual bags to save space. And, of course, don’t forget to put the most delicate items in the upper part of the suitcase so they do not wrinkle.
TRICK 3: Organisation! It seems obvious after talking about placing things as in Tetris, but a perfect idea for having everything organised and avoiding reorganising the suitcase is to use cloth bags that serve as compartments. This way you will know what is in each place and it won’t be necessary to constantly unpack and pack your suitcase. This is also an incredible idea if you travel with a backpack instead of a suitcase.
TRICK 4: Depending on when the trip is and especially on the season, one of the infallible tricks is to wear the bulkiest items when travelling in plane. Following this trick, you’ll get additional space in your suitcase in case you want to buy a souvenir of the place you have traveled to. It may seem silly, but sometimes we don’t know where to put all the souvenirs we bring to family and friends.
TRICK 5: An always essential tip that many people forget to think about is security. It is important to close the suitcase and lock it so that no one can open it when you’re not looking and take everything you carry in it.
We believe that, with all the information provided and the tricks mentioned, organizing a suitcase will no longer be a headache prior a great trip. Besides, doing it in a thoughtful way, ahead of time, it’ll all be easy.
Now, enjoy everything it takes to plan a trip!
Extra tip: On airplanes, it’s always very cold, so remember to take a jacket or a sweater so you won’t arrive frozen at your destination.
